Cougars Defeat Division II Massasoit

(Holyoke, MA) – Men's soccer put forth one of their strongest performances of the season on Tuesday afternoon, shutting out Massasoit CC. The Cougars worked relentlessly on their home field, defeating their traditionally very tough Division II opponent 2-0. The win is Holyoke's second in a row and the shutout is their second of the year.

Ben Mahoney (Longmeadow, MA / Longmeadow HS) opened the scoring, burying a goal in the tenth minute. Elijah Picard (Westhampton, MA / Hampshire Regional HS) scored the Cougars' second in the 69th minute with a spectacular shot from 40 yards out. Picard blasted a wicked bending ball that nicked the top of the left inside post before finding the back of the net, truly a highlight reel goal. Goalkeeper Rider Gallow (Belchertown, MA / Hopkins Academy) was outstanding, making eight saves including several of the sensational variety. Gallow registers his first complete shutout of the season, having shared one with a teammate earlier this year.

Men's soccer improves to 4-7-0 overall. They are 1-5-0 in the region and will need to win both of their remaining games to have any chance of sneaking into the postseason. Holyoke will play their home finale on Saturday, October 18th at 1pm against Roxbury CC. Let's go Cougars!
