Amanda Cummings’ Soccer Jersey Retired in Pregame Ceremony
Former Women's Soccer Player Honored by HCC Athletic Department
(Holyoke, MA) – Former Lady Cougars' soccer standout Amanda Cummings (Agawam, MA / Agawam HS) was posthumously honored with a jersey retirement ceremony by HCC's Athletic Department on Saturday afternoon. Cummings tragically lost her life in an act of violence in August of 2023.
An absolute star on the soccer field, Cummings had a remarkable career at HCC, playing for the team in 2010 and 2011. She was named 1st Team All-New England (All-Region) and chosen as the team's most valuable player during both of her years played. Cummings won a New England championship while at Holyoke and in 2011 was selected as a 1st team NJCAA All-American. She was a team captain during her sophomore year and helped the women's soccer program to their highest-ever ranking in the NJCAA national rankings when the team reached #2. Cummings will always be remembered as one of the toughest and fiercest defenders ever to wear the Cougar uniform. A class act on and off the field, she was one of the best teammates anyone could ever have and a truly wonderful human being with a contagious smile. The HCC Athletic Department is lucky and proud to honor her as their first athlete to ever have a jersey retired.
One of Cummings' #7 soccer uniforms was incased in a frame and presented to her family during Saturday's jersey retirement ceremony. Another uniform will be displayed at HCC's Bartley Center. HCC president George Timmons was among those to speak at the event. Many of Cummings' teammates were in attendance for the ceremony, along with family and friends, to pay tribute to and honor her memory and soccer career.
